Civil Engineering is concerned with planning, designing, constructing, and operating various physical works; developing and utilizing natural resources in an environmentally sound manner; providing the infrastructure which supports the highest quality of life in the history of the world.Environmental Engineering use principles of engineering, chemistry, and biology to develop technical solutions to provide safe water, sanitation and clean air.
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers ME, MS and PhD degrees. These graduate degrees provide a more focused academic experience within an area of Geotechnical, Environmental, Structural, Transportation, Hydraulics and Water Resource Engineering. Students are provided the opportunity to work on cutting edge research with faculty who are experts in their field.

David Stevens is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and a researcher at the Utah Water Research Laboratory. He teaches undergraduate and graduate Environmental Engineering courses. He is currently working several projects related to modeling of surface water quality for source water protection and total maximum daily load analyses. He has over 40 publications in wastewater treatment, remediation of subsurface environments, water quality modeling, and TMDL assessment. He is also interested in environmental statistics, Bayesian networks, and computer-based decision support systems for environmental management. He consults with the US EPA, Utah Division of Water Quality, and private industry.
